Sri Lankan Elephant
Common Name: Sri Lankan elephant -ALIYA(sinhala)
Scientific Name: Elephas maximus maximus
Habitat: Tropical and Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests
Location: Southwestern Sri Lanka/b>/>/>>/>/>>/>>/>>/>
Elephants hold aesthetic, cultural and economic importance in Sri Lanka. They are used for carrying timber and have a special significance and role in religious events. Many local and international tourists visit the county’s national parks to observe elephants in the wild, thus boosting Sri Lanka’s economy through tourism. Elephants can be observed in protected areas such as Yala, Wasgomuva, Udawalawe, Minneriva and Kaudulla.
However, the subspecies continues to be threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and the conflict between government troops and the Tamil Tigers in the northeastern region of the country.
More on the Ecology of the Sri Lankan Elephant
Physical Description
The Sri Lankan species is the largest of the Asian elephant genus, and has patches with no skin color on its ears, face, trunk and belly. This is the darkest of all Asian elephants.
Night Camping in The Jungle
Night camping in woods is a great experience, which should be experienced by any nature lover at least once in life. This experience is possible to be had here in Sri Lanka too. In any National park in Sri Lanka you can have this experience which mesmerizes you to the utmost.
We had our night camping experience at Elephant pass camping site at Udawalawe National park. This is situated 20km away from the main gate of the National park. It is a gorgeous place near the Walawe stream. This becomes an even more significant experience as we were able to travel in a Caravan prior to reaching our camping site.
Anyone who knows something about nature must understand that woods are far more beautiful at night, than it is during the day time. Simultaneously it is the time, during which you might get mesmerized by the tranquility of woods. A night under a tent in woods gives you a thousand of feelings and experiences other than mere enjoyment. Spending a night at a bungalow in a National park even cannot be compared to this experience.
Apart from Elephant pass camping site in Udawalawe National park, there are two others too (one of them is named as French Edge). Night camping at a camping site after travelling in a Caravan also is a new experience to Sri Lankans. -Dilan Dharshana-

---------------------------------------------------------
The Sacred Fig (Ficus religiosa) or Bo-Tree is a species of banyan fig native to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, southwest China and Indochina east to Vietnam. It is known by a wide range of local names, such as Bo or pou , bawdi or bawdi nyaung in Burmese, Bodhi (in Thai, though pronounced Po), Pipal (peepal, peepul, pippala, pimpal, etc.), arasa maram or Ashvastha tree. It is a large dry season-deciduous or semi-evergreen tree up to 30 m tall and with a trunk diameter of up to 3 m.
The leaves are cordate in shape with a distinctive extended tip; they are 10-17cm long and 8-12cm broad, with a 6-10cm petiole. The fruit is a small fig 1-1.5cm diameter, green ripening purple.
The Bodhi tree and the Sri Maha Bodhi propagated from it are famous specimens of Sacred Fig. The known planting date of the latter, 288 BC, gives it the oldest verified age for any angiosperm plant.
This plant is considered sacred by the followers of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism, and hence the name 'Sacred Fig' was given to it. Siddhartha Gautama is referred to have been sitting underneath a Bo-Tree when he was enlightened (Bodhi), or "awakened" (Buddha). Thus, the Bo-Tree is well-known symbol for happiness, prosperity, longevity and good luck. Today in India, Hindu Sadhus still meditate below this tree, and in Theravada Buddhist Southeast Asia, the tree's massive trunk is often the site of Buddhist and animist shrines
wwf-Water is too precious to be wastesd
According to scientific revelations life on earth was begun and it is survived due to water. At the very first moment the water completely evaporates from the earth that will be the beginning of end of all the living beings on earth including human kind. That is why it is important to preserve water from wastage.
According to recent researches the fresh water resources that remain on earth are not adequate for the usage of living beings. In accordance with, 97% of the water on the earth is unusable sea water. 2% of the 3% left are there as ice bergs in northern and southern poles. Therefore the usable fresh water on the earth is less than 1 %( 0.3%).
The trouble of not having sufficient fresh water resources have worsened as the remaining sources have not spreaded throughout the world equally. According to expertise a third world war may occur due to the particular matter. In the recent past there have been a few occasions in which people have struggled over the usage of fresh water. That's why it is said the value of water has arisen immensely over the value of crude oil.
The pollution of fresh water resources has worsened the trouble even more.
On 22nd of April we celebrated the World Earth Day. To protect the human kind as well as the life on earth it is important to preserve water on it
