Ballooning Sri Lanka @ Dambulla

lights typically depart shortly after sunrise as this is when the air is cool and winds are calm. Hot Air Balloon Flights are very weather permitting and require good visibility and low wind speeds.

Preplanning is necessary since flights average about an hour or so and the whole excursion is upto about 3 ½ hours from the time of pick up to the time you are dropped back at your hotel, pre-planning pays off. There are no bathrooms aboard the balloon.

The main components of a hot air balloon are the envelope (balloon), fuel system, and gondola (basket). Most envelopes are made from ripstop nylon which is similar to the material for parachutes. One difference is that the ripstop is coated inside to contain the hot air. It is open at the bottom to receive the heating flame and have a deflation port, a large opening at the top that allows the hot air to escape during landing.
The fuel system is composed of the heater, which burns propane to heat the air in the envelope, fuel tanks, which are carried in the basket; and hoses, which connect the two. The basket is constructed of wickerwork rattan and is connected to the envelope by cables. The flexibility has great absorption level and is comfortable for the guests during landing.

Instruments used in a hot air balloon are the altimeter measures height above sea level, the pyrometer measures the temperature at the top of the balloon's envelope and of course the compass tells which direction you are heading.

Safety is absolute. In order to fly paying passengers a Pilot must have a Commercial Licence and validated in the country he flies by the Civil Aviation Authority of the respective country.

A balloon used for carrying passengers must have a standard-type certification. Every balloon must be inspected annually by an authorized Inspector. Balloons that carry passengers for hire have even more rigorous maintenance requirements.

·         Commercial / Instructor rated - Pilots
·         Certified and Registered Balloons
·         Certified annual maintenance Inspections
·         Full commercial liability insurance.
Our Insurers are Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.

The passenger capacity varies from the sizes of balloons, which is based more on weight and temperature than the number of passengers. Our balloons can carry up to 24 passengers per flight per day.

Dress casually and comfortably for the weather, it is a little warmer while the sun is out. We also recommend closed toe shoes to opened toe or high heeled shoes as we want to protect your feet just as much as the rest of you. A hat or cap to protect you from the heat.
From Ballooning @ DambullaWe encourage families to participate in Hot Air Ballooning, however there are issues to consider before deciding to take your children. The sides of the basket are approximately 4’ high, therefore, children who are not as tall will not enjoy the beautiful views and may get irritated. Adults are not permitted to hold or carry children during a flight and a child under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Another fact to consider is, the burners directly above. We've found that very young children, are often frightened by the noise of the burner. Because of these reasons and past experience, children under the age of 7 are not permitted to take the flight.

Pregnant mothers and guests taking medications must consult their physician before flying in a Hot Air Balloon.

You are most welcomed to bring in your still or video cameras aboard to take as much memorable pictures and videos to last a lifetime of your memorable sky safari over beautiful Sri Lanka !!

We normally reach between 500 and 2,500 feet high - and where allowed.

Where the hot air balloon flies is always in the direction of the wind and no two flights are the same.

After your flight, we'll present you with a personalized certificate signed by your pilot.

Many people who have a fear of heights or were just anxious about flying have realized, it is not what they were expecting, there is no rocking or turbulence like on a plane. Why don't you give it a try and have a new experience.

The landing ! Wish we had an answer for you on that one, but we don't! This is really a part of the excitement and adventure of ballooning! We might land in a large field or even someone's front yard !

The direction of the Hot Air Balloon cannot be controlled by steering as it travels only with the wind and at the speed of the wind. There are usually different wind directions at different altitudes, and by seeking out different wind currents a pilot can maneuver his balloon in several directions.

For safety reasons, balloonists generally prefer for the winds to be less than 10 mph and the clouds to be at least 2000' above the ground.

Flying distance depends on the winds. Since we fly with the winds, if the wind is 2 mph, we will fly about 2 miles. If the wind is 8 mph, we will fly closer to 8 miles. You get the picture.

After the landing, we go nowhere until our crew shows up to get us. Balloon chasing is a fun challenge and hopefully the chase will be there waiting for us, or will arrive shortly after we land to take you back to your place of pick up and to pack up the balloon. Your vehicle could also join in the fun with our chase team, if you wish!
After each flight we commemorate the adventure with a Champagne Celebration.

Before a  flight takes off the Pilot will brief you on safety once all of you are in the basket, all instructions must be adhered to accordingly.

Jaffna Trip 03 -Out Of The Town

POINT PADRO , பருத்தித்துறை, පේදුරු තුඩුව

The point Pedro is at 432 Km distance from point Donra and most people coming to Jaffna and visiting Nagadeepa and Nallur kovil, like to visit point Pedro as well. Many of them like to take photographs at this beautiful place.

Dambakola Patuna

A text saying, "Lankeshwara Narendra, uttering merry words, got in to water with the people belonging to 16 different castes, bearing the maha bodhi on his head…" can be seen near the 'bodhi' at the entrance to Dambakola Patuna. The wonderful white sandy beach with dents in Dambakola Patuna is added more beauty by the bays making their way in to the land. Dambakola Patuna with its beautiful beach is a most suitable for anyone coming from India or any other country to land in and for us Sri Lankans it is an important place as it was here that Theri Sangamiththa landed in with the Sri Maha Bodhi plant. So it wouldn’t be wrong to call Dambakolapatuna the place through where Buddhism came to Sri Lanka.

Keerimali,கீரிமலை

The Keerimalai pond is situated in Keerimalai devala premises. The two ponds known as Keerimalai pond are just a few feet away from the sea but contain fresh water and even more surprisingly the water in these two ponds are blue in colour. There's a belief that it is the wall that separates the ponds from the sea that keeps their water fresh. The word 'Kiramalei' means the mountain of mongoose ('Kira' meaning mongoose and 'Malei' meaning the mountain)

According to the legend, a prince and a princess came to Sri Lanka from India and when they landed here their faces had turned to horse and mongoose faces as the result of a curse of gods. Later the prince's face had become normal again in the place called "Mawattapuram" while the princess' face turned normal after she bathed from the " Keerimalai" pond. The devala was later raised in respect of this miracle. The Hindus venerate this place with great respect and they float the ash of their cremated relatives in the sea near the pond. As they believe that the water in these ponds have the power to rejuvenate the old people and fertilize the infertile people. They venerate the ponds with such respect that some of the devotees can be seen worshipping the water as they get in to water. The Kiramalei pond was last repaired in 1969.

From jaffna out of the town

Kadurugoda temple
Route- if coming from Kiramalei, you have to turn to left from the 'Chunnakam' junction and go toward 'Sankani' to see the 'Kadurugoda' temple which is better known in the area as 'Kandarodei'.
According to the past records, there had been 60 stupas in this temple. The 60 stupas had been built to place the ash of 60 arhath theros from 'Punkudativ'. The Department of Archeology has found 56 of the stupas so far and thus the Kadurugoda temple bears a significant historical importance due to these archeological factors.

The well with no bottom.

The well with no bottom is situated in the Point Pedro- Puthur road and the well is so called because its bottom has not been discovered yet by any. There is a belief that the 'Kiramalei' pond is connected to this well beneath the ground. It is believed so as a lime, put in to this well once, had come up from the Kiramalei pond.

Casuarina beach
The beautiful shallow beach with sand was an extremely popular destination before the war. Paying just Rs 500, you can go on a boat ride in the sea near Casuarina beach.

Few of the places you can visit in Jaffna
Welikandu, Kodikaman kovil, Vallipuram stone inscription, Hanuman kovil are a few of the most popular sites in Jaffna. You can have accommodation facility at the rest house at Naga Viharaya. A single room can be taken at a price between Rs 300 to Rs 500 while a double room can be taken at Rs 750. In addition to that, there are several other places you can select to for accommodation.

The Historical way to Buttala - Katharagama ( Kataragama )-පරණ පාරක් දැන යමු කතරගම

Bookmark and Share

Whatever is your religion, you might have gone to Katharagama at least once in your life. But the route which took you there might be either the road through Hambanthota or the road through Ambilipitiya. But there is another path which leads to Kathragama though it is not much popular during recent times. That is the Buttala – Sellakatharagama road which begins from Badalkumbura.

Long ago this route has been the most famous route to Katharagama. But later this route has been abandoned, which became quite unpopular. But when the Gammudawa construction work was done this road was developed to a certain extent. Yet it is not very famous. May be that is why the evidence of the travelers in the past, still remains there. At that time the consumers of this road might have travelled either by foot or cart, which were the popular means of travelling at that time.

Once you get Badalkumbura you can reach this track which has a length of 20 km. This road has fallen mostly parallel to the Manick stream though it moves away at certain places.

There are a number of places where our ancestors have rested on their way to Katharagama. Madama is one such a place where a wayside rest (Ambalama) has been situated. Waanemangkada, Thimbulketiya, Galge, Bhaay Lindha, Galkema are few other such places which are worth mentioning. Walliamman Aru, a place that we meet on our way is another place which should be mentioned. According to folk tales Walli Matha had swung on a swing at that place. Though this route has a history as well as a story unknown as that, it has been abandoned unfortunately.
This might be a great experience if you intend to follow the footprints of our ancestors.
If you intend to have this experience, Hena Holiday Resort is the best option. They will arrange this trip for you along with comfortable accommodation. Contact 0772990299.

Night Camping in The Jungle

Night camping in woods is a great experience, which should be experienced by any nature lover at least once in life. This experience is possible to be had here in Sri Lanka too. In any National park in Sri Lanka you can have this experience which mesmerizes you to the utmost.

We had our night camping experience at Elephant pass camping site at Udawalawe National park. This is situated 20km away from the main gate of the National park. It is a gorgeous place near the Walawe stream. This becomes an even more significant experience as we were able to travel in a Caravan prior to reaching our camping site.

Anyone who knows something about nature must understand that woods are far more beautiful at night, than it is during the day time. Simultaneously it is the time, during which you might get mesmerized by the tranquility of woods. A night under a tent in woods gives you a thousand of feelings and experiences other than mere enjoyment. Spending a night at a bungalow in a National park even cannot be compared to this experience.

Apart from Elephant pass camping site in Udawalawe National park, there are two others too (one of them is named as French Edge). Night camping at a camping site after travelling in a Caravan also is a new experience to Sri Lankans. -Dilan Dharshana-

This place is called Arugam bay because of a green coloured moss called Arugam remains in the bottom of the bay. It is considered this is the place where Viharamadevi had disembarked. During low tide season this bay becomes a shallow lagoon.
In this area due to the nature of the sea it is suitable for surfing. And Arugam bay is among the best three surfing points in the world too.
With a little distance to Arugam bay there is a beautiful set of rocks called ‘Crocodile Rock’ which is visible as a set of sun bathing crocodiles. There is a coral reef on the bottom of the sea in this area.
Pothuville point is rocky ground near Arugam bay. It is the highest place in Pothuville. There are a few cottages in this place which were built for Eco-tourism.
Muhudu Maha Vihara is an ancient temple situated near Arugam bay. There are many clues to prove that this temple has been built at the place where Viharamadevi has disembarked. According to the history, this temple has been built by king Mahadathaka in 3
rd centenary A.D. For a long period of time this place remained unknown covered with sand. 50 years ago it was unveiled through excavations. A Buddha statue made up of moonstone has been found.
It is said the Magul Maha Vihara which situates nearby is the place where the royal wedding of king Kavanthissa had taken place.
The Bay is located 220 km due East of Colombo. It is a popular surfing and tourist destination. if you need any ifo pls cont:0773261117-Dilan Dharshana

GREAT RAILWAY JOURNEYS OF THE SRI LANKA The railway line from Colombo to Badulla is a spectacular railway line which, over a distance of 180 miles(290km), ascends from sea level to 6500 feet and then descends in to the Uva valley (or Uva Basin as it is usually called) to terminate at Badulla at 2000 feet. The railway was built by the British in the latter part of the 19th century primarily for freight.(Guage: 5ft6in, 1676mm) Since then very little has been changed. The gradients are steep and the tight curves prevent the use of modern rolling stock. Because of the rugged terrain earthslips are common. There are 46 tunnels on this line and one complete spiral (at Demodera). There are only two trains in any one direction each day which run the whole distance. The Udarata Menike takes at least 9 hours to do the journey (on a good day!) !
